✈️ Arriving at Changi Airport – A Calm Step-by-Step Guide for First-Time Visitors to Singapore
By Kim Ngân – Singapore Travel Guide
🌟 Why This Guide Matters
Changi Airport isn’t just an entry point. It’s your first glimpse of Singapore’s harmony, order, and quiet elegance. For first-time visitors, stepping off the plane into this meticulously designed space can feel almost… peaceful.
But it’s also easy to feel a little overwhelmed — immigration, baggage claim, SIM cards, transport… and all you want is a cup of kopi and a soft landing.
This guide walks you through every step calmly, so your Singapore journey starts not in confusion — but in comfort.
🧳 Step 1: Immigration – Documents You’ll Need
Before you line up at immigration, make sure you’ve prepared:
- Valid passport (at least 6 months remaining)
- Singapore Arrival Card the link here
- Return/onward flight ticket
- Hotel/residence details
- Proof of funds (rarely asked but good to have)
📝 Tip: Singapore no longer uses physical immigration cards. The arrival form is digital — submit before boarding if possible.
🛄 Step 2: Baggage Claim – Quick and Smooth
Check the display screens for your belt number.
Baggage usually arrives within 10–15 minutes.
Luggage carts are free and everywhere.
🌸 Tip: Changi is known for its orchid displays, carpeted arrival halls, and gentle lighting — soak it in while waiting.
📶 Step 3: SIM Card or eSIM – Getting Connected Instantly
Once you exit customs, look for:
- Changi Recommends counters (24/7)
- Singtel / StarHub / M1 booths near Arrivals
- Most offer unlimited data packages for 5–7 days (around S$12–S$18)
🔗 Tip: If you’re using an iPhone or newer Android, consider downloading a prepaid eSIM before arrival (Airalo, Nomad, etc.)
💱 Step 4: Currency Exchange or ATM – What’s Best?
You’ll need Singapore Dollars (SGD) for transport, food, and small purchases.
You have 3 options:
- ATM withdrawal – safest rates, but check foreign transaction fees
- Money changers – good rates at Changi’s Travelex or UOB counters
- Currency exchange apps – e.g. YouTrip, Revolut (if you have them set up)
💡 Tip: Grab rides & most stores accept credit cards or PayNow, but hawker stalls are still cash-preferred.
🚇 Step 5: Transport from Changi to the City
You’ve arrived. Now how to get into town?
Option Time Cost Best for
MRT (Subway) ~40 min S$2 Budget travelers
Grab (Ride-hailing) ~25 min S$18–S$25 Convenience & luggage
Airport Shuttle ~30–45 min S$10 Hotels in CBD
Taxi ~25 min S$20–S$30 Easy with kids/elderly
🚆 Tip: Take the East-West Line from Changi MRT (Green Line) if you want to experience Singapore’s clean, smooth subway from Day 1.
The moment you land at Changi, you’ll feel it — the quiet order, the greenery, the understated beauty.
Take your time. Let the airport be more than a passage. Let it be the first calm breath of your journey.
